Shirley A Schmidt, 93, passed away at 5:25 pm on Sunday, June 16, 2024 at LaBella in Alton, IL.
She was born on April 27, 1931 in Alton, IL the daughter of George C. and Lorine (Lagemann) Chappell. On January 21, 1951 Shirley married Earl D. Schmidt, they celebrated 70 years of marriage before his passing on September 5, 2021.
Shirley was a member of Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, IL where she was very involved within the church. She was an Elder within the church, was active within the Women's Fellowship and the Stephen Ministries Leader. With having a large family, family was very important to her and she enjoyed spending time with them. At large family gatherings she was known from her assortment of pies and for bringing the baked beans.
She is survived by her children, James Schmidt (Dana) of Albuquerque, NM, Carla Schwarz of Belleville, IL, Carol Schmidt (Roger McFarland) of St. Louis, MO; and Ann Kolarik (Bruce) of Wichita, KS; grandchildren, Mark Schmidt (Stephanie), Dale Schmidt (Mariana Uribe), Sara Schmidt, Melissa McFarland (Sam Sparks), Thomas McFarland, and Matthew Schwarz; great granddaughters, Josephine and Margaret Schmidt; and a sister Sandra Vail.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl; and her siblings, Imogene Watson, Ruth Fowler, Mildred Malson, Susan Yost, and Michael Chappell.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June 21, 2024 from 10:00 am until the time of service at 11:00 at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Godfrey, IL
Graveside service will be private.
Memorials are suggested to the Evangelical United Church of Christ or the Crisis Food Center.
