Rosemary Sturgeon

Grafton |

Rosemary Surgeon, 92, formerly of Grafton, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Thursday, April 30, 2020.

Rosemary began her life in Calhoun County, Illinois on October 15, 1927 and was a graduate of Calhoun High School.

She knew her late husband, John Surgeon, throughout her childhood, but their romance began at a Calhoun County wedding dance near the end of World War II. They married at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton on December 27, 1948. They lived together, raising their children, in the Grafton area. She became a widow at the age of 53, after 36 years of marriage. She later moved to Godfrey, where she resided for over 30 years.

Rosemary's great love was her family. She was a devoted and loyal mother, always putting her children first in her time, talents and energy. Her signature phrase was 'I love you more!' Her home was always open with offerings of tasty food, a warm smile and unlimited time to patiently listen. She modeled independence and wisdom in all areas of her life. As her health declined, that devotion was lovingly returned by her extended family, especially her son, John, who lived with her and provided exceptional care for her.

She is survived by her children, Melodye (John) VanOudheusden of Monroe, Michigan; Susan Surgeon of Grafton; Kim (Art) Roemer of Alton; Mary Surgeon Pistorius of Granite City and John Surgeon of Godfrey; as well as 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Surgeon; a sister, Ann Simon; as well as her mother, Alice Anderson.

Her family would like to thank the nurses and aides of Jerseyville Manor and OSF Hospice for their attentive care of Rosemary in her last months of her life.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a private Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with burial to follow at the Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton.

Donations in Rosemary's memory may be given to St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Grafton or to St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic School in Jerseyville, in care of Crawford Funeral Home, 1308 State Highway 109, Jerseyville, IL 62052, who has been entrusted with arrangements.
