Ray Alven Basden passed away on Monday, June 3, 2024, one day after his 88th birthday. He was born June 2, 1936, in Alton the son of the late James and Lena (Smith) Basden. He served in the US Army Reserves and worked for 36 years at what was Albrecht-Hamlin Chevrolet in Wood River. As a devoted fisherman and avid golfer, he enjoyed his retirement years on the many courses around the Alton area and after his cancer diagnosis in 2016, he was so grateful for all his good friends that ensured he could continue to do the things he loved. On February 23, 1957, he married Darlene Ray Fletcher and she survives. Also surviving are two daughters; Kathryn Dennis (Lawrence) and Rebecca Basden, three grandchildren; Matthew Dennis (Kelly), Erin Salkeld (Josh) and Samuel Dennis (Maddie), six great grandchildren; Jack Salkeld, Madelyn Dennis, Miley Salkeld, Emersyn Dennis, Blakely Dennis and Betty Salkeld, one brother, Timothy Basden and three sisters, Esther Parker, Barb Woods and Alice Gurley. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by four brothers, Paul, Eugene, Daniel, Andrew and four sisters, Marcella Parker, Marylou Ewing, Ruth Woods and Shirley Aud. In honor of Mr. Basden a memorial service will be celebrated at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
