David Richards passed away at his home on November 28, 2020, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. David was born on June 11, 1941 to Guy B. and E. Virginia (Scandrett) Richards in Alton, Illinois. He graduated from Roxana High School in 1959 then later from Ranken Technical College in 1962.
David married the love of his life, Judith A. Gaul, on June 9, 1973 in Staunton, Illinois. They had two sons, Scott and Andrew.
David enjoyed teaching his grandchildren how to play UNO, taking train trips with his train club and ushering at his church.
David also enjoyed serving his community for 59 years at the Rosewood Heights Fire Department. David held many positions over his volunteer career in the fire service including Captain and Assistant Chief. He also served the Rosewood Heights Fire District as a Trustee for many years. David could always be found in the back of the Engine House on Fish Fry days frying hundreds of pounds of fish.
David is survived by his sons and their wives, Scott and Angy Richards and Andrew and Vanessa Richards, his grandchildren Kiley, Reagan and Adam Richards, and his step grandchildren Natalie, Brayden and Camden Hogle and Logan, Hannah and Chloe Overton. David is also survived by dear family friends Bill and Mary Birdsell.
In celebration of his life, the family will hold a visitation from 4pm to 7pm on Saturday, December 12, 2020, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River. Private funeral services will be held at the church. Pastor David Schultz will officiate. Burial will follow at Oakwood Cemetery in Greenfield, Illinois.
David will be missed by his family, fellow firefighters and the local community.
Memorials may be made to the Rosewood Heights Fire Department or the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River.
