Maxine May (Shanks) DeWitt, 85, died at 10:48 pm on July 28th, 2017 at the home of her son Frank and wife Donna where she had lived for several years.
She was born on August 28th, 1931 in Carrollton to Robert & Velma (Conrad) Shanks. She graduated from Carrollton Community High School class of 1950, worked at the International Shoe Company in Jerseyville, Oettle’s Grocery in Kane, and at the Kane Post Office.
Maxine served the Village of Kane as a trustee, treasurer and village president. Her last public office held was Kane Township Clerk.
She was married February 19, 1955 in Kampsville, Il. to Elbert “Buddy” DeWitt and they shared 43 years together before his death on July 21, 1998. She was a member of the Kane Baptist Church for over 50 years. She had been a church deaconess for many years and organized many church funeral dinners.
Maxine is survived by her two sons and one daughter in law: Frank & Donna DeWitt of Kane and Chris DeWitt & companion Amy Taylor as well as her children of Carrollton; one grandson who was her pride and joy, Benjamin; two sisters: Sue (Bob) Hill of Grafton and Diana (Kenny) Winfree of Moro; one brother: Bob (Marie) Shanks of Jerseyville; several nieces and nephews; two very special cousins and spouses of Buddy’s that have been a constant in Maxine’s life: Richard & Dorthea Reno and Retha Vi & Raymond Carr, all of Kane. Maxine was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister and brother-in-law: Priscilla & George (Junior) Shaw; and one brother: Paul (Sambo) Shanks. A very Special niece Cassie (Shaw) Warren and a nephew Paul Shanks, Jr.
Visitation will be held from 9:00-11:00am on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Kane Baptist Church with funeral at 11:00am at the church with Rev. Chuck Keene officiating. Burial will be held at Kane Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Kane Baptist Church or Boyd Memorial Hospital.
