Mary Gross

Mary Martha Gross, 72, formerly of Alton, died at 12:00 noon Sunday, October 7, 2012 at her daughter’s home in Kane, IL. Born October 1, 1940 in Alton, she was the daughter of Frank and Sabina (Berghoff) Rynders. She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. She retired after 29 years of service with the Office of the Treasurer at Alton City Hall. She also worked at the Kohl’s Department Store in Springfield for four years and always enjoyed watching the St. Louis Cardinals play baseball. On February 7, 1959 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, she married Paul John Gross. He preceded her in death on August 24, 2003.

Surviving are three daughters, Cynthia L. Buschmann (Keith) of Godfrey, Pamela S. Ruyle (Reginald) of Kane, and Victoria L. Slone (Ken) of Gillespie, three grandson, Ryan Freeman, Kenneth Hitch, and Blake Buschmann, one granddaughter, Kaitlynn M. Hitch, a great granddaughter, Layla Freeman, one step granddaughter, Jacquee Schilling (Shaun), five step grandchildren, and 8 step great grandchildren. Also surviving is a brother, Thomas Rynders (Jeanne) of Godfrey, a sister, Barbara A. Gibbons (John) of Godfrey, five sisters-in-law, Norma Rummerfield of Godfrey, Estelle and Carol Rynders of Godfrey, Martha Rynders of Alton, and Janice Bloodworth of Lakeland, TN, three brothers-in-law, James Gross (Cheryl) of Godfrey, David Gross (Leona) of Ferguson, MO, and Robert Dennis Gross.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Ellis, Jim, Harold, and Robert Rynders.

Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. In celebration of her life, she will be remembered at Mass at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2012 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Godfrey. Father Steve Pohlman will officiate.

urial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.

Memorials may be made to St. Ambrose School or Marquette Catholic High School.
