Lawrence Everett “Z MAN” Zimmerman, Jr., 75, passed away at 12:05 p.m., Monday, May 18, 2026 at Christian Hospital Northeast.
He was born in Grafton, Illinois on January 11, 1951, the son of the late Lawrence Everett Zimmerman, Sr. and Vera Hope (Sutton) Legate.
He answered the call to serve his country by enlisting with the United States Marine Corps., serving our nation honorably.. Being a Marine was not simply a chapter of his life, but a part of who he was at his core. He carried great pride in his military service and often shared stories and memories from his time in uniform with family, friends and anyone willing to listen. The experiences, friendships and sense of duty he gained through his service remained deeply important to him throughout his life.
For many years, he served as the Superintendent for the Veterans Assistance Commission, where he was able to continue supporting and advocating for fellow veterans, a role that reflected both his loyalty to his country and his respect for those who served alongside him.
He married the former Kathleen Mae Gettings on September 8, 1990 and together they shared many years of companionship until her passing on October 18, 2017.
Outside of his work and military life, he enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time socializing with friends. He deeply valued the camaraderie and connections he made throughout the years.
Surviving are his children, Laurie (Robert) Hoffman of Belleville, Jeffery Zimmerman of Aransas Pass, Texas, Larry Zimmerman of Derby, Vermont, April (Chris) Daley of Jerseyville and Josiah (Cassandra) Zimmerman of Brighton; 11 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Cynthia (Dallas) Potts of Smithboro.
A Celebration of Life Memorial Gathering will be held from 12 p.m. until 4 p.m., Saturday, May 30, 2026 at the Jerseyville American Legion Post #492 in Jerseyville.
Military Honors will be conducted by the Jerseyville American Legion Honor Guard at 12 p.m., in recognition of Lawrence’s honorable service to our country through the United States Marine Corps.
