LaVerna M. Corbitt, 89, of Bethalto, passed away on Thursday, April 30, 2026.
She was born in Pilot Knob Township, IL, on June 27, 1936, the daughter of Wesley and Myra (McClain) Grote. LaVerna married James "Jay" Corbitt at the 2nd Baptist Church in Granite City on September 24, 1963. He preceded her in death on July 7, 2009.
LaVerna devoted her life to serving others, working as a counselor in the Granite City School District and offering guidance, wisdom, and compassion to all who knew her. She was a faithful member of Granite City 2nd Baptist Church and later became a member of Bethalto 1st Baptist Church, where she spent most of her adult life as a Bible study teacher. Her love for God’s word was evident in the way she lived and in the many lives she touched. LaVerna had a remarkable ability to make people feel seen, valued, and understood. She formed deep and lasting connections with friends and family alike. Her joyful personality and wonderful sense of humor meant she was almost always laughing, bringing light and comfort to those around her. In her younger years, LaVerna enjoyed playing field hockey and tennis, she loved games of all kinds, especially cards and dominos. She and her husband Jay shared a love of travel, often including their grandchildren on trips that created lasting family bonds.
Above all, LaVerna cherished her family. She was a devoted mother, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother, and the heart of her family. Her legacy of love, faith, laughter, and kindness will continue to live on in the many lives she influenced. Her family will forever remember her as an extraordinary woman whose impact cannot be measured.
She is survived by her children, Ann Fromme, of Bethalto, and Della (Andy) Damon of Lee's Summit, MO; a sister-in-law, Diane Grote of Collinsville; grandchildren, Hillary (Kevon) Moradi of Sedalia, MO, Mark (Lyndsey) Fromme of Moscow Mills, MO, Jake (Alexis) Fromme of Edwardsville, and Tori (Augie) Mathews of Yukon, OK; great-grandchildren, Isabella, Kylo, Haddon, James, Rhett, Rosemary, Alex, and Cove; and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, and husband, Jay, she was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jeffrey Fromme; brother and sister-in-law, Jim Grote; and a sister and brother-in-law, Betty (Jack) Haug; and a sister-in-law, Sandy Grote.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 8, 2026, from 3 pm until time of service at 5 pm, at 1st Baptist Church of Bethalto. Pastor Larry Rhodes will officiate.
