John Thornton

John Roscoe Thornton, 92, of Medora, IL, passed away on June 16, 2024.
He was born on January 6, 1932, in Brighton, IL, to the late Lawrence and Viola (Alexander) Thornton.

John married Thelma Cox on June 30, 1956, together they had 4 children. They later divorced and he married Helen Wayman on April 14, 1967, he loved and help raise her seven children as his own.

John spent several years in the Army. He retired from the Monterey Coal Mine and owned J & B TV Shop with Robert “Rab” Brown. He also built stock cars and ran at the Godfrey Speedway. John loved to go on camping adventures, especially with his dear friend Jake Seets. He enjoyed listening to music, spending time with his grandchildren, a good card game, and finding a good place to eat.

He is survived by his children Evelyn Kessinger, Johnny Thornton, Gary (Leann) Thornton, Sherrie Drennan, Donna Morrison, Earl (Rhonda) Bailey, Linda Kirchner, Marvin (Marilyn) Bailey, Ronald Bailey, Jimmy Bell, and special friend Sandra Sprinot; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Helen (Wayman) Thornton and a son David Bailey; siblings, Clarence Thornton, James Thornton, Katherine Cravens, Freda Buckley, and Treva Ele.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of memorial service at noon on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Anderson Family Funeral Home in Brighton, IL.

Burial will follow at Maple Lawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to American Cancer Society.
