Joanne Schulmeister

Alton |

Dr. Joanne (Jody) Schulmeister, 66, passed away peacefully on June 25th, 2024, in her husband’s loving arms. She is survived by her devoted husband, Dr. Larry Newquist, and their cherished children: Lawrence E. Newquist II, Corbin J. Newquist and his wife Ariel, and Devora M. Newquist. Jody also leaves behind her beloved dogs, Peanut and Jack.

A proud resident of Alton/Godfrey, Jody graduated from Alton High School, the University of Illinois, and Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine. She married Dr. Larry Newquist on March 25th, 1988, at St. Ambrose Church in Godfrey, Illinois. Jody was a phenomenal wife and mother, providing unconditional love and creating joyous family memories, particularly during holidays and vacations. Christmas was especially dear to her heart.

Jody was an avid sports fan, relishing moments with the Fighting Illini, the St. Louis Cardinals, and any of her children's sporting events. She shared her love for music and theater with her children through lessons and family outings to the Fox Theater.

Jody’s dental career was marked by dedication and compassion. She began her practice with her father in Alton, Illinois, and later, in 1990, opened a practice with Larry in Godfrey. Her integrity, humor, and genuine care for her patients made her a beloved figure in the community. She viewed her practice as a second home, treating her staff and patients like family.

Her community involvement included supporting Alton and Marquette high schools, the Alton Boys and Girls Club, Riverbend Head Start, the NAACP, the 100 Black Men Organization, the Oasis Center, Hope Rescue, and Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine.

A celebration of Jody’s life will be held on July 1st, 2024, from 4 PM to 8 PM at Elias, Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, with a brief program of memories and an honorary toast at 6:30 PM.

Any donations can be made to Hope Animal Rescues in honor of Dr. Jody, where she adopted one of her babies, Jack.
