James J. Patterson, 86, died at 4:53 a.m. Tuesday, March 1, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital.  James was born on Oct. 14, 1924 in Bakerton, Penn., the son of Edward and Mary (Hadley) Patterson.  He married Joanne Thus, who preceded him in death in January of 1996.

James served his country during World War II as an air crew member of the 8th Air Force based in England.  He was employed by the U.S. government for 37 years, retiring in 1980 as a manager in his facility.  He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, a life member of American Legion Post 3 of Lincoln, Neb., BPOE Lodge #80 of Lincoln, Loyal Order of the Moose #1349 in Wood River, and Veterans of Foreign Wars, Alton Post #1308.  He was an avid golfer, enjoyed reading and dancing.

He is survived by his son, Timothy of Raleigh, N.C.; granddaughter Heather of Pasadena, Calif., grandson Christopher of Hebron, Neb.; many nieces and nephews; and multiple friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; daughter Deborah Mitchell; brother William; and sisters Edna, Ruth, Marcella and Freda.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 3 at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, where Rev. Daniel Decker will officiate services at 11 a.m. Friday, March 4.

Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.

Memorials may be given to the church.
