Helen M. Downs passed away at 11:47 p.m. Friday, December 10, 2010 at VIP Manor in Wood River with her family by her side.
She was born June 6, 1929 in St. Louis, Mo. to Joseph F. Schroeck and Hester Helen Davis. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, William W. Downs and three sisters.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Joann M. and Richard King of Edwardsville; daughter Nancy L. Eihausen of Belleville and her fiancée John Eiseman; a son and daughter-in-law, John W. Downs and Patricia of Mokena, Ill.; three grandsons, Brian Shea, also called “Dr. Watson” of Cottage Hills, David Shea of South Roxana, and Derrick Eihausen and his wife Angel of Fort Meyers, Fla.; two great granddaughters, Barbara Esterlin and her husband Lawrence of Maryville and Alexandra Eihausen of Fort Meyers; her great grandson, John Scott Eihausen of Fort Meyers; two very special children she grew to love as her own grandchildren, Eric Hansen of Bethalto and Amy French of St. Louis; her travel partners Irma Friedline, Billie and Marvin Cole and Charlie Chappell.
She was a member of the Goldenaires and enjoyed her many trips with them, Senior Citizens, and R & R Tours. She was an avid Cardinals baseball fan, and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Alton VFW Post 1308. She was a bowler and also enjoyed her line dancing classes. She worked at several area jewelry stores, including Hurwitz Jewelers in East Alton, Carson Jewelers in Alton, and 24 years at the jewelry department at the Venture store in Alton.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 14 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, where Pastor Thomas Fea will officiate services at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 15.
Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in St. Louis.
