Glade Barth

Bunker Hill |

Glade William “Goose” Barth (75) of Bunker Hill, IL died peacefully at Barnes/Siteman Cancer Center on June 12th, 2021, of pancreatic cancer. His children were by his side.

He was born in Alton, IL on June 27th, 1945. The only child of William G. “Buck” Barth and Dolores C. (Henke) Barth. Early on his parents knew they had the perfect child, which is why they only had one. He was without question, one of a kind.

Glade was preceded in death by both parents. He is survived by his children Shane “Gozz” (Kristin) Barth of Bunker Hill, Dulcie Barth of Edwardsville, and Meghan Redwitz of Bunker Hill. Grandchildren are Jason Barth of Alton, Dylan Redwitz of Edwardsville, Marissa Barth of Bunker Hill and Evangelina (Eva) Barth of Edwardsville.

Goose will be forever remembered for his mischievous grin, big smile, the twinkle in his eyes and roaring laughter. His life was well lived, and he was well loved. He never met a stranger no matter where he was at. From the East Coast to the West Coast, it was not uncommon for him to unexpectedly cross paths with someone he knew. He was always up for a spontaneous road trip with friends or hopping on a flight to visit one of his children and grandchildren when they lived out of state. His children, grandchildren and friends meant everything to him.

He was a graduate of Bunker Hill High School Class of 1963. During his school years he loved playing basketball. He excelled in his sport and earned a basketball scholarship.  He then served in the U.S. Navy from 1965 to 1969. Stationed in Long Beach, CA and aboard the USS Amphion in Norfolk, VA. The Amphion was designed and built to carry out a primary mission of making emergency and routine repairs to ships of the fleet during periods of technical availability. It was equipped with a wide variety of repair shops.  After the Navy he became a 50-year member of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #553 in Wood River, IL. Retiring in July of 2003 with 46 years of active service. He served as inside guard from 1983-2003.

During his free time, you could frequently find Goose in one of his garages working on a variety of projects for himself and others. He loved welding, vehicle repairs and refurbishing motorcycles, vintage cars and trucks. A constant flow of friends and family benefited from his skills and willingness to lend a helping hand. His last restoration project was a 1956 Chevy truck with his son (Shane).  He was a member of the Bunker Hill American Legion Post #578. Donating his time and participating in different events throughout the years.  He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
