Gerald Maberry

Rosewood Heights |

Gerald 'Gary' Maberry, 80, passed away at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Alton Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family and pastor.

He was born on September 29, 1936 in Athensville, IL, the son of Russell and Caroline (Preston) Maberry.

He married the love of his life, Minnie Theresa "Terry" Peart on September 21, 1957 in Bloomington.

Gary graduated from Illinois State University with a degree in agriculture and received his Master's degree from Murray State university in biology and chemistry.  He devoted 33 years of service as an educator in the Roxana School District, and his love of athletics led him to be a devoted coach and mentor.

Gary's love of gardening found him caring for over 300 tomato plants each year, leaving him plenty to give to family and friends.  Gary and Terry found joy in hosting Sunday afternoon pool parties at their home on East Haller Dr., embellishing their favorite saying, "A stranger is a friend that you haven't met yet".  Gary was also an avid hunter and upland game enthusiast, who preferred to have his English Setters by his side.  During retirement, he and his wife spent 13 years on Little Gaspirilla Island in Florida developing and nurturing lifelong friendships.

Gary is survived by three sons and their spouses, Mark and Sherry Maberry of Wood River, Matt and Kristin Maberry of Bethalto, Scott and Amy Maberry of Alton.  He was a beloved grandfather to Nick, Morgan, Jordan, Mackenzie, Sydnee, Ella and Sean; and great grandfather to Blake, Jason, Hailey and Chloe.

He was preceded in death by his lovely wife, Minnie 'Terry' Theresa; and his parents, Russell 'Red' Maberry and Rachel Caroline Maberry.

Gary's family will be honoring him on Tuesday, January 10 from 4-8 p.m. at the First Christian Church in Wood River.  Walter McCaslin will officiate a celebration of his life on Wednesday, January 11 at 10 a.m., followed by a private graveside family service.

Memorials can be made to the First Christian Church Building Fund in lieu of flowers to honor the community and organizations that nurtured Gary and his family.

Marks Mortuary in Wood River is in charge of arrangements.
