Edith “Edie” Tonsor, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, passed away on August 8, 2026 at the age of 88.
She was born in Kampsville, IL. To Bill and Rosa Lehr.
Edie married Joseph “Joe” Tonsor on November 25, 1961 and shared 53 years together before his passing on September 25, 2014.
A loving and proud mother, Edie is survived by her daughter Angie (Mike) Hancox, and two sons, Bill (Marcie) Tonsor and Scott (Amy) Tonsor; 8 grandchildren, Joe (Owen) Hancox, Adam (Fiancé Taylor) Hancox, Katie Hancox, Chrissy (Craig) McGraw, Ellie (Mike) Mahaffy, Valerie (Reid) Schmidling, Abby (Fiancé Nick) Tonsor, and Hannah (Vince) Burke; 7 great-grandchildren, each of whom will be taught how to be generous, kind, helpful, and hardworking just like their grandmother.
Edie’s home was the center of family meals. Her homemade noodles, chicken and dumplings, cookies, and cinnamon rolls were some of the best. Never could a grandchild visit without finding Little Debbie’s or cookies in the cookie jar or ice cream in the freezer.
She was a devoted Catholic and member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She volunteered many hours at school and church. She was involved in playground duty, cleaning the church. Edie and Joe ran the bingo stand at the harvest fest together and was always on the lookout for great gifts for the winners.
Edie’s love for cooking, gardening, and canning took her to the jobs she had. She worked in the kitchen and Greenwood Manor Nursing home and at Egelhoff’s Florals. Getting her hands dirty and watching her fruits of labor was a highlight.
After retirement, Joe and her were able to travel more with dear friends. They would play games of Gin Rummy on the many bus trips they took together. They also found great pleasure in attending the grandkids' many events.
In addition to her loving husband, Edie was preceded in death by her parents, Bill and Rosa Lehr; sisters, June Richards and Berniece Baumann; and brothers, Elmer and Gene Lehr.
Edie’s family would like to thank the staff at Jerseyville Nursing and Rehab, where she has lived for the past 8 years. They also want to thank Vitas Hospice, especially her nurse Tiffany, for the past 3 years, she has provided care, compassion, and love to “Ms. Edie”.
Prayer Service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Thursday, August 13, 2026 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, followed by a visitation from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:30 a.m., on Friday, August 14, 2026 at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Vitas Hospice or to Jerseyville Nursing and Rehab for new outdoor furniture.
