Douglas W. Sawyer, 77, passed away June 3, 2024 at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital in Alton.
Born Nov. 12, 1946 in Elizabeth City, NC, he was a son of Charles and Margaret Naomi (Harris) Sawyer.
Doug worked as a construction laborer for Local #338 in Wood River and retired at age 55. He enjoyed politics, crossword puzzles, and enjoyed gambling. He loved to travel, and he especially loved his dog Lucy, who went everywhere with him.
He is survived by his children, Douglas W. (Joy) Sawyer, II of Alton, Kelly (Corey Hutson) Sawyer of Hartford, and Michelle (Marcus) Rounds of Alton; his grandchildren, Grace Sawyer and her husband Devin Schmitz, Anna Sawyer, Errin and Erryal DeBruce, Jordan Sawyer, Aaliyah (Pierre) Guy, and Marcus Rounds, Jr.; great grandchildren, Ramya, Rayla, Renni, Maelyn, Isabelle, Baylee, Elijah, and Analeia; his brother, Sam Harris of Texas; and nieces who were raised with him Debbie (Robert) Steiner of Tennessee and Suzy (Michael) Staples of North Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Andrew Sawyer; two brothers, Charles R. Sawyer and Lemuel “Ray” Sawyer; and his sister, Naomi Trueblood.
The family will hold a private service at a later date.
