Charlsie Vunovic

Charlsie L. Vunovic, nee-Burch, 95, of Granite City, Illinois passed away at 1:53 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at her home. Born February 28, 1929, in Aubrey, Texas, a daughter of the late Charles and Grace (Bogard) Burch. She married Walter G. Vunovic on November 27, 1954, in Granite City and he passed away on January 2, 2012. Charlsie graduate from Granite City High School in June 1946. Shortly after graduation, she began a 27-year career at General Steel Industries, Commonwealth Plant, where she ended up in St. Louis working for the Chairman of the Board. She later was employed with KMOX Radio and ended her career with seventeen years at Boatmen’s Bank. Charlsie was a charter member of the Tri-Cities Chapter, National Secretaries Association and especially enjoyed her sponsorship of the Future Secretaries Association chapters at Granite City South and North and at Madison High Schools. She was proud to receive the title of Illinois Secretary of the Year in 1964. She was a devoted and faithful member of Central Christian Church in Granite City and had served as a volunteer secretary for five years. In addition to spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, she enjoyed working on projects involving plastic canvas, knitting, crocheting and contact paper. She and her husband also enjoyed many years of weekend camping with close friends at the Tomahawk Campground in Pierron. She is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy and Rick Hodge of Caseyville and Lynn Davis of Granite City; five grandchildren and spouses, Matthew and Christy Davis, Shellie Conley, Ryan and Katie Hodge, Julianne Hodge and Kevin Hodge; eight great grandchildren, Ashlynn Conley, Cason Curry, Eden Hodge, Elleyna Hodge, Cody Jacober, Paige Jacober, Vaughn Davis and Vance Davis; special friend, John Behlmann; many nieces; nephews; cousins; other extended family and friends. In addition to her beloved husband of 57 years and parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles “R.C.” Burch and Weldon and Peggy Burch and a sister and brother-in-law, Sue and Durrel Barnett.

In celebration of her life, visitation will be at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City on Tuesday, July 2, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until time of a funeral service at 12:00 noon with Reverend Derrell Brame officiating. Burial will follow at Lakeview Memorial Gardens in Fairview Heights. Memorials may be made to Central Christian Church and may be accepted at the funeral chapel. www.irwinchapel.com
