Charles William “Bill” Bates, 62, passed away at 8:10 a.m. Thursday, March 8, 2018 at St. Louis University Hospital.
Born Nov. 14, 1955 in Wood River, he was the son of John Junior “Jack” and Dorothea Rosela “Dottie” (Rowley) Bates. They both preceded him in death.
Bill retired from the U.S. Navy and later worked as a steelworker for Granite City Steel. He enjoyed fishing and loved his music and his cars.
He married Linda Kay Fravell Jan. 20, 1975 in Wood River. She also preceded him in death on Nov. 7, 2014.
He is survived by two daughters, Christine Lynn Bates and her husband Ron Dolan of Louisville, KY and Amy Marie Gardner and her husband Dennis of Benld; 4 grandchildren, Erin Ashlee Dolan, TessaMarie Lynn Richardson and her husband William, Dustin Tanner Bonser, and Tylor Seneca Bonser; a great granddaughter, KenleeMarie Lynn Fuller; and his loving companion, Brenda Hill.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 at Paynic Home for Funerals, where services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 14. Pastor Steven Friese will officiate, and full military honors will be provided by the Alton VFW Post #1308 Ritual Team.
Burial will be at a later date at Valley View Cemetery in Edwardsville.
