Charles D. “Dennie” Dengler, 87, of Millstadt, IL, born September 9, 1938, in Belleville, IL, died Sunday, February 8, 2026, at Oak Hill Accolade, Waterloo, IL.
Mr. Dengler worked in civil service as a computer specialist for the U.S. Army before his retirement. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and playing cards. Dennie was a member of both St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, and St. James Catholic Church, Millstadt, IL. As an active member of St. Augustine’s, he was one of the first of two eucharistic ministers to be appointed at the church in 1975. He ran the parish bingo for 35 years, was a money counter for Sunday Mass, maintained the roster for parish membership, and was in charge of the bank registry for the parish picnic and wurstmarkt.
Dennie was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Leeta, nee Johnson, Dengler; a son, Michael Dengler; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Lester and Jennie, nee Santoro, Freiberg; and a sister-in-law, Loretta Krah.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Rosalie, nee Freiberg, Dengler, whom he married on April 15, 1961, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East St. Louis, IL; a son, Gary (Julie) Dengler of Millstadt, IL; a granddaughter, Hannah Dengler (Jake Lewis); two brothers-in-law, Dennis (Peg) Freiberg, and Charles Krah; and dear nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation – Gateway Chapter or to St. Augustine Catholic Church. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at www.rennerfh.com.
Visitation: Friends may visit from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, February 15, 2026, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2026, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL.
Funeral: A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 16, 2026, at St. Augustine of Canterbury Catholic Church, Belleville, IL, with Msgr. William McGhee officiating.
Burial will be at Green Mount Catholic Cemetery, Belleville, IL.
