Bernadine Liefer

Bernadine Louise Liefer, 83, of Bethalto, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, with her family by her side.

She was born on September 18, 1942, in Carlyle, IL, the daughter of Walter and Olinda (Brink) Hanke. Bernadine married Myron Liefer in Ferrin, IL, on August 10, 1968. He preceded her in death on May 8, 1990.

Bernadine worked at St. Peter's Manor in St. Charles, MO, for many years as an activity director after earning her Associates Degree from Kaskaskia College. She was a very active member in the church with her husband, Reverend Liefer, where she was a member of the Ladies Aid, a Sunday School teacher, and attended every funeral and wedding. Bernadine went to as many events for her grandchildren as she possibly could. She loved her family and grandchildren dearly. Bernadine was a selfless woman and loved to care for others. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her children, Matthew (Angela) Liefer and Christine (Jeffrey) Nolle; siblings, Carolyn (Vernon) Freund and Carl (Sharon) Hanke; grandchildren, Jacob Isaiah Liefer, James Liefer, Myron Liefer, Jacob Myron Liefer, Joshua Liefer, Lukas Liefer, Adam Nolle, Jack Nolle, Kyle Nolle, and Ryan Nolle.

Along with her parents, and husband, Myron, she was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Liefer; and an infant sister, Marilyn Hanke.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 26, 2026, from 2 to 5 pm, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Visitation will continue at Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 10 am until time of service at 11 am. Pastor Kale Hanson will officiate.

Burial will take place at Hillcrest Cemetery in Centralia, IL.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church in Centralia, IL and/or Zion Lutheran Church in Bethalto, IL.
