Anna Hopkins
Alhambra | Save
Our beloved mother, Anna Lee (Thomas) Hopkins, 94, passed away in the early morning hours of February 3, 2026, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra. She was born February 4, 1931, to Charley and Leola Thomas (Bess) in Grassy, Missouri, just a little east of Castor River.
In 1948, she married the love of her life, Gene Hopkins, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, who she met at a box supper social where she won the "prettiest girl contest". After she married they moved from the farm to St. Louis to work. They finally settled in Cottage Hills and lived there until 2017 when they moved to Asbury Village in Godfrey. They were married 69 years before his passing on January 5, 2018.
Anna had deep faith in her savior, Jesus Christ. She was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Forest Homes for many years where she organized many funeral luncheons, banquets, and dinners. In the 1980's she and her sister, Helen, co-owned Hartford Beauty Supply. After Helen passed, her sister Reva helped her run the business. She will also be remembered for her compassionate caregiving.
Growing up on a farm, the eleventh child of 13, she learned not only hard manual labor but how to care for her younger disabled sister and her sick mother. She had a very close relationship with all her siblings. They had lots of fun times camping, playing cards and traveling together. Because of her upbringing, she was a person who accepted anyone and cared for everyone.
In later years, her caregiving continued when she took care of many of her loved ones. Anna had an endearing personality. She loved socializing with family and friends. When her grandchildren were around, her eyes lit up. She kept us all laughing with her sense of humor and quick wit. She also possessed many gifts which she loved sharing with family and friends. Among them were painting, quilting, gardening, canning, baking, and making maple syrup. She also loved hosting many large family gatherings.
She is survived and will be deeply missed by daughters, Kathy Steinmann of Godfrey, Anna (Jack) Hartmann of Godfrey, son, David (Jennifer) Hopkins of Troy, IL; grandchildren, Rachel (Scott) Brady, Erin Mallory, Josh (Addy) Steinmann, David (Megan) Hartmann, Amy (Justin) Manker, Daniel (Alicia) Hartmann, Lindsay (Cameron) Stuart, John (Jana) Hopkins and Stephen Hopkins; great grandchildren, Gabriel, Hattie, Anna, Liam, Julian, Arlie, Livia, Lilianna, Lucy, Elijah, Charlie, James, Scarlett, Theodore, Lillian and Charlie. She is also survived by a host of other family and friends.
Along with her parents, and her husband, Gene; she was preceded in death by her siblings, Herbert, Eula (Pape), Raymond, Sterling, Lowell, Warren, Helen (Loafman), Reva (Williams), Nadine (Phillips), Glenda (Hall), Sue Thomas, and an infant girl.
