Alice Shumake

Alice "Carol" Shumake, 86, passed away on Wednesday, June 10, 2026.

She was born in East St. Louis, IL, on January 26, 1940, the daughter of Hubert and Alice (Whiteaker) Brooks. She married Frederick J. Shumake at Maplewood Park Baptist Church in Cahokia on July 15, 1961, he passed October 14, 2001. She later married Robert Galbraith in 2002 in Holiday Shores, he passed in February of 2007. She married her husband, James "Jim" A. Kannall on April 6, 2009 in Harlingin, Texas, he survives.

Carol spent the first half of her life as a homemaker, mom, and partner with Fred in the grocery business. Later she obtained her nursing degree and dedicated herself to caring for others as a Registered Nurse in hospitals throughout the St. Louis area, retiring from Barnes-Jewish Hospital. A devoted member of Holiday Shores Baptist Church, she was actively involved in the life and ministry of her church family. Alice found great joy in cooking and extending hospitality alongside her husband, creating a welcoming home for family and friends. She enjoyed fishing, dancing, playing cards, arts and crafts, making plaques, sewing, quilting, and painting. Above all, Carol treasured the time she spent with her friends and family.

Survivors include her husband, Jim; children, Fred (Lori) Shumake, Jr. of Holiday Shores, and Mark (Rachelle) Shumake of Goreville, IL; stepdaughters, Geri (Pete) Dochwat of Alhambra, and Karrie (Paul) Schaefer of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Eric (Kelsey) Shumake, Chad (partner - Kaelyn Hamel) Shumake, Hope (Jeff) Dunn, and Landon (fiancée - Alexis) Shumake; great-grandchildren, Addie, Kaden and Ayla (twins); siblings, Nancy Rice of Waterloo, IL, Lola (Barry) Rahr of Springfield, MO, Donna Munson of Springfield, MO, Bob Brooks of Springfield, MO, and Jim (Donna) Brooks of Rolla, MO; and many extended family members.

Along with her parents and husbands, Frederick and Robert, she was preceded in death by a son, Greg Shumake; brothers-in-law, Gene Rice and Bob Munson; and a sister-in-law, Vicki Brooks.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 18, 2026, from 9 am until time of service at 11 am, at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Her son Fred Shumake, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Valhalla Gardens in Belleville, IL.
