Alice Jean (Hunt) Matlack, 89, was born on January 21, 1936, in Wrights Township, Illinois, to Joyce W. and Doris (Craig) Hunt. She attended elementary school in Wrights and graduated from Shipman High School in 1953. During her high school years, Alice worked in her father’s grocery store in Shipman—a formative experience that later inspired her to own and operate the Ben Franklin store in Bunker Hill.
Shortly after graduating, she married Marvin Matlack, and they raised four children: Linda, Kisoe, Marvin Jr., and Brent. In 1976, they built a home on the family farm in Shipman, a centennial farm, where they shared many years until their passing.
Alice was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose greatest joy was her family. She lovingly cared for her mother, Doris, in her own home for more than 35 years. Her life was marked by quiet sacrifice and unwavering love for her family.
She was preceded in death by her husband Marvin and her youngest son Brent. She is survived by her children: Linda (Richard) Fellars, Kisoe Korte, and Marvin Jr. and Karen; Brenda (Matlack) Litchfield; 9 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren and a foster sister, Linda Morehead Wilson.
Alice lived in Wrights, Shipman, Bunker Hill, and Godfrey, Illinois, and spent many winters in Phoenix, Arizona. Her faith was central to her life. Her walk with the Lord was strengthened by three churches, Faith Baptist in Godrey Illinois, Calvary Baptist Church in Alton and the Immanuel Bible Church in Scottsdale, AZ.
Alice is remembered as a faithful and joyful follower of Jesus—always quick with a warm smile and a kind word. She passed away peacefully at Hospice of the Valley in Phoenix, Arizona, surrounded by her loved ones. She is now at rest with her Lord.
In accordance with her wishes, no memorial service will be held.
