Alice Bates

Alice Quinn Bates, 89, died at 3:15 pm on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Alton Memorial Hospital. She was born December 31, 1934 in LaGrange, GA.  The daughter of the late Alva and Annie Mae (Houze) Breed.

Alice came to accept Jesus as Lord and Savior at the age of 12, while attending Dunson Baptist Church.  She married Bobby R. Bates on June 11, 1954 in LaGrange, GA and he preceded her in death on August 16, 1985.  God blessed them with one son, Corey G. Bates, the joy of her life.

Alice worked several jobs, ending up in the world of banking.  She retired as Vice President from Roosevelt Bank in 1990.  After retirement, she worked at Celebration Center Christian Bookstore and Bibles and More Christian Book store in Alton.  She was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Godfrey, since 1968, where she was very active singing in the choir, working in the nursery and in the kitchen.  She had a very fulfilling life and gives God all the credit.

Surviving are her son, Corey and his wife Lillian (Guccione).  She felt Lillian was more like a daughter than daughter in law and loved her very much.  Three grandchildren; Anne Casey of Edwardsville, Joshua Bates of Carbondale and Clark Bates (Jessie Timmermeier) of Birmingham England. She was also blessed with nine great grandchildren: Olivia, Abby, Christopher, Connor, Tony, Tayla, Bethany, Alex and Levi.  Also surviving are one brother, Jerry (Claudia) Breed of Georgia and Jenny Smith of Alabama. Besides her husband and parents she was preceded in death by two brothers, Sonny Breed and Thomas Breed and two sisters, Stella Abernathy and Jane Burchette.

Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Friday February 16, 2024 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Saturday February 17, 2024 at Faith Baptist Church in Godfrey.  Reverend Tom Olney will officiate.  Burial immediately following at Bethany Cemetery in Godfrey.
