WOOD RIVER – Two parking-related ordinances received unanimous approval from the Wood River City Council at their Aug. 3, 2026 meeting.

One ordinance designates an area near the Stevens Building at 118 N. Haller St. as a no-parking zone, while the other places new parking time limits on certain city-owned lots. Both ordinances take effect immediately.
The first change was prompted by a request from the Wood River Fire Department and the Madison County Housing Authority on behalf of the Stevens Building. Police Chief Brad Wells said prohibiting parking in the area will allow easier access for first responders in the event of an emergency.
“If there was a fire emergency there, it gives the firetrucks room on the east side of the building and then also on the north side of the building,” Wells said.
The newly approved no-parking zone will extend along Haller Street from the Stevens Building to Acton Avenue.
The other ordinance updates parking times at certain city-owned lots along the west side of Wood River Avenue, between Lorena and Ferguson Avenues.
The ordinance designates each of these lots as public parking lots and restricts people from parking vehicles in these lots for longer than three hours at any time, day or night. Exceptions apply to the westernmost row of parking spaces adjacent to Lorena Avenue, which are designated for parking up to 10 hours at a time.
When asked about the different time limits, Police Chief Brad Wells said the 10-hour parking spaces are mostly used by commuters and employees who work nearby.
