Authorities issued commands to person to drop their weapon, but they failed to comply.

GRANITE CITY — As of 3 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, officers remained at the scene where an armed person was shot in the 2000 block of Edison Avenue in Granite City after the person did not comply with officer demands to drop their weapon.

Granite City police and Madison County Sheriff’s Office deputies converged on the scene just before 10:20 a.m. The armed person was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, Illinois State Police authorities at the scene said.

None of the officers at the scene were injured.

As of 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, officers remained at the scene, and the Illinois State Police was investigating. The ISP’s Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 6 has been asked to handle the internal inquiry into the shooting.

The case will be submitted to the Madison County State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
