ROXANA — The Freeburg Midgets defeated the Southwestern Piasa Birds 53-38 on Friday at the Roxana Hoopsgiving Tournament, securing a spot in the 9th-place game Saturday.

Freeburg maintained the lead throughout the contest, starting with a 14-9 advantage after the first quarter. Southwestern narrowed the gap in the second quarter, trailing by just two points at halftime, 25-23.

After the break, Freeburg surged ahead, outscoring Southwestern 16-4 in the third quarter to take a 41-27 lead into the final period. The teams were nearly even in the fourth quarter, with Freeburg outscoring Southwestern 12-11.

Brady Kerr led Freeburg with 12 points, followed by Joe Carmack with 11 points.

Southwestern was led by Connor Wood with 9 points and Cason Robinson with 8 points.

Southwestern will face Jersey in the 11th-place game on Saturday.
