EDWARDSVILLE - Edwardsville opened its indoor girls track and field season this past weekend in Chicago at the Dr. Conrad Worrill Invitational with a second-place team finish, highlighted by multiple school records and meet records.

Coach Howard and Sophie Shapiro.Joi Story.Sophie Shapiro, the Tigers' track sensation, led the way with a second-place finish in the 60 hurdles with a time of 8.77, a school record. She also was fourth in the 400 meters in a time of 59.62, a personal record and an indoor school record. In the shot put, Edwardsville's Joi Story threw 13.10, a personal record listed as a meet record and third all-time.

In the 200, Anoke placed fifth in 25.45, a personal record and an indoor school record, while Zakkour ran 26.89, a personal record listed as No. 3 all time.

Edwardsville’s 4x400 relay of Reagan Jumper, Gestes, Serena Shapiro and Sophie Shapiro ran 4:02.9, listed as a meet record and a school record.

“Our season opener was all we could ask for in Chicago,” the Tigers' head girls' track and field coach Deserea Howard said, detailing the team’s results.

Edwardsville’s 4x800 relay placed third in 10:13.1 with Morgan Popelar, Mackenna Kerpan, Jillian Suhre and Willow Jackson. Also in the 60-meter hurdles, the Tigers' Adara Martin ran 9.74.

In the 60-meter dash, Joslyn Springman ran 8.25 and Niema Williams ran 8.67. The 4x200 relay team of Springman, Jahzara Zakkour, Joanna Anoke and Morgan Gestes placed fifth in 1:45.18, an indoor school record.

In field events, Gestes placed third in the long jump with a personal record of 5.28. Madison Heng placed fifth in the triple jump with a personal record of 10.40. Also in the shot put, the Tigers' Jayla Gathing threw 9.44.
