“Give the guys credit,” East St. Louis head coach Mark Chambers said. “They played hard. Once they started, they got their rhythm a little bit, they got their zone. And then, and really, to be honest with you, the game was won on the defensive side of the ball. We were able to get some stops in the second half and then make a run.
"So, I think they went up nine, and then, from that point, we were able to cut that lead, and actually take the lead. So, I was very proud of our guys on how they set out on the defensive end, they played together, and for this to be early in the season, I’m proud of them, and we’re going to definitely grow from this.”Chambers smiled when it was mentioned that it was just another night in the Southwestern Conference.
“Oh, I love the Southwestern Conference,” Chambers said. “It’s night in and night out, you’ve definitely got a tough game. We’re looking forward to the rest of the season and just getting better as we go. I think we’re going to be really, really good. Once we get everybody here, everybody will be healthy.
"Right now, we’re down a couple of guys, so I only played about six or seven people tonight, so our bench will get a little deeper. And then, I really expect us to do some really good things. So, once we get going, we will continue to grow and get better. I’m just looking forward to a great season.”
East Side is now 2-1 on the season, and plays at O’Fallon on Tuesday night, then hosts McCluer North next Friday, both games starting at 7:30 p.m., then travels to East Point, Ga. To play Tri-Cities High in a game that starts at 6 p.m. Central time.
