GODFREY — Christmas in July, a fundraiser organized by Margaret Freer for Community Christmas, raised a record $85,000 on July 24, 2026, at Freer Auto Body in Godfrey, with proceeds going to help provide local families with toys, clothes, food, hygiene items and more during the holiday season.
The total surpassed last year’s previous record of $76,000.
“It was a monumental accomplishment,” Freer said. “We have a wonderful, giving community. The Christmas in July fundraiser is the main one we do.”
Community members stopped at Freer Auto Body on July 24 for a sloppy joe lunch and to enter a raffle for major prizes. For a donation, attendees could receive a sloppy joe and chips, with additional donations accepted for a slice of cheesecake made by host Margaret Freer or a cookie from Ginger Bean Bakery. Freer's cheesecake is considered second to none by those who consume it annually at this gathering.
Freer said the raffle was a key to the successful fundraiser. She thanked the people and businesses that donated raffle prizes, including Alton Elite, Axalta Coatings and PRS, Rhonda and Jim Halford, Jayne and John Simmons, and Tiffany and Shane Seiler.
“My suppliers all step up to help, too,” Freer said. “We have such a giving community, which makes this happen. It wouldn't be possible without such a caring community.”
The Freers will host their Cookies and Cocoa Toy Drive later this year. Freer Auto Body also accepts donations for Community Christmas year-round.
