Staunton took an early lead, outscoring EAWR 11-6 in the first quarter. The Lady Bulldogs intensified their pressure in the second quarter, a challenge for EAWR, which was without injured point guard Hailey Handler. Staunton entered halftime ahead 25-12.
“We had 15 girls, and 8 are freshmen this year. We are hoping that Handler heals fast because, as you can imagine, with the pressure tonight, a point guard would help, although Maddelyn Stone and Ryann Adams have stepped up in the role,” EAWR coach Joe Sears said.
In the third quarter, Staunton extended their lead to 45-23. In the final quarter, Buttry scored a basket with just minutes remaining. Staunton outscored EAWR 11-10 in the last period to secure the win.
Buttry led EAWR with 18 points, followed by Averi Gillam with six. For Staunton, Jenna Staggs scored 20 points and Anna Machota added 16.
A follow-up story on Buttry’s milestone will be published tomorrow.
