ALTON – Two residents and a local organization are the latest recipients of refunded garbage collection fees from the City of Alton.

Alton’s latest set of bills and expenditures, listed in the May 26, 2026 Comptroller’s Report, show three refunds that were paid out of the city’s General Fund regarding garbage collection fees.
The largest of the three refunds totals $5,668.84 and was paid out to the Alton Volunteer Emergency Corps, a volunteer nonprofit search and rescue organization based in Alton. Two other refunds – one totaling $1,505 and the other totaling $1,028.48 – were paid to two city residents.
The previous Comptroller’s Report from May 13, 2026 shows additional garbage fee refunds that were paid earlier this month. One resident received a refund of $104.94, while two other residents received refunds totaling $15 and $10.42.
Comptroller Paul Fritsch previously said his office has been “crunching the different numbers” to find the exact amount still owed to the city after aldermen called for more aggressive action to collect an estimated $1.6 million in delinquent trash bills.
The City of Alton continually bills properties with active water service for monthly trash collection services. Even if water service is discontinued at the property, the city does not automatically stop sending trash bills until they receive a written request to abate the property’s trash service.
