GODFREY — A passenger died and a driver was injured early this morning after a black 1999 SUV crashed in a construction zone near West Delmar Avenue and West Homer Adams Parkway in Godfrey, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office.

A Madison County sheriff’s deputy was flagged down by a motorist around 1:47 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 20, 2026, who reported that a crash had just occurred in the area, the sheriff’s office said. Deputies arrived and found an overturned vehicle. The Godfrey Fire Department and Alton Memorial EMS also responded.

A preliminary investigation found the SUV was traveling east on West Delmar Avenue approaching West Homer Adams Parkway, which is under construction, when it collided with a concrete barrier in the construction zone and overturned several times. The sheriff’s office said the vehicle was traveling at an apparent high rate of speed.

The driver was treated for injuries and later taken to a St. Louis-area hospital, where the driver was listed in stable condition.

The passenger died. The sheriff’s office said the passenger has been identified, but formal identification will not be made until family has been notified.

The crash is being investigated by the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the Madison County Coroner’s Office and members of the Metro East Crash Assistance Team.

The roadway has reopened after being closed for several hours during the crash reconstruction investigation.
