MARQUETTE CATHOLIC 7, STAUNTON 1

Marquette Catholic's boys soccer team scored early and built its lead in a 7-1 victory over Staunton at Staunton, using three first-half goals and four more after halftime to secure the win.

Parker Belchik opened the scoring for Marquette off an assist from Parker Hough at 5:50. Nico Martinez followed with a goal from Eli Baggio at 11:46, and Belchik scored again from Baggio at 21:57 to make it 3-0.

Staunton scored at 32:00 before halftime, cutting Marquette’s lead to 3-1.

Marquette added to the lead in the second half when Hough scored from Baggio at 13:59. Brock Woodward scored from William Waters at 16:57, and Hough added another goal at 34:04.

Logan Anderson capped the scoring with a penalty kick at 35:45.

FATHER MCGIVNEY CATHOLIC 4, SPRINGFIELD SACRED HEART-GRIFFIN CATHOLIC 0: Eddie Foppe, Brendan Kayser, Tucker Sundberg, and Owen Weissert scored for McGivney in the season-opening win at SH-G.

Patrick Gierer made six saves in goal to record his first clean sheet of the season.

The Griffins are 1-0-0, while the Cyclones start off 0-1-0.

HIGHLAND 2, EDWARDSVILLE 1: Carter Bohnenstiehl's brace (two goals) was enough to give Highland a season-opening win over visiting Edwardsville, a game which marked the debut of new Tigers' coach Josh Boyd, who took over for the retired Mark Heiderscheid.

Cameron Coziar had five saves in goal for the Bulldogs, who are now 1-0-0, while Edwardsville opens up 0-1-0.

JERSEY 5, SOUTHWESTERN 1: Jersey Community High School boys' varsity soccer traveled to the East Alton-Wood River Tournament and picked up a 5-1 victory over Southwestern on Tuesday night.

Bradley Tueth led the Panthers with three goals, while Carson Nevlin and Kevin Hernandez each added a goal. Justice Drainer recorded two assists, with Michael Vogel and Dylan Roth each contributing one assist.

In other results from Tuesday, Waterloo shut out Murphysboro 7-0, Granite City won its opener over Mascoutah 2-1 in the Metro Cup showcase at Belleville West's Bob Goalby Field, Belleville Althoff Catholic won over Breese Central 8-1, Carlyle defeated Valmeyer 6-1, and West edged Maryville Christian 3-2.

In a pair of results from Monday, Centralia defeated Carlyle 6-2, and the Maroons won a penalty kick shootout 3-0 to edge Trenton Wesclin 2-1.

OTHER JERSEY RESULTS

Jersey Community Middle School baseball beat Maryville Christian on Tuesday by a 7-6 score. Brayden Muntz pitched a complete game while Layne Goetten and Jaxton Valstad collected 2 hits each. The Panthers' record is now 4-2 on the season.

JCHS tennis traveled to Granite City and easily beat the Warriors, 9-0.

JCMS softball traveled to Roxana and picked up two wins. The varsity team won 18-7, collecting 12 hits. Willow McNelly had a double, Holly Fry collected a triple, and Emma Herter earned the win. The JV team also picked up a 13-12 victory, with Beatrice Krueger hitting a double. Marley Beilsmith, Lucy Rothe, and Brooklyn Metcalfe all pitched in the win.

GIRLS FLAG FOOTBALL

In a pair of flag football season openers on Tuesday, Mascoutah won over Hillsboro 45-0, and Belleville East defeated Alton 73-0 in the Redbirds' inaugural game.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

BUNKER HILL 25, 25, CARLINVILLE 23, 21

Bunker Hill handed Carlinville a season-opening loss tonight at the Big House in Carlinville, defeating the Cavaliers 23-25, 21-25.

Carlinville, now 0-1, was led at the service line by Ruthie Reels, who had nine service points and three aces. Reels also recorded six digs, tied with Jada Barkley for the team lead, and had 12 receptions.

Sylvee Gibbs led Carlinville with four kills, Avery Davis had six assists, and Lexie O’Brien finished with four blocks.

Bunker Hill also defeated Carlinville at the junior varsity level.

OTHER RESULTS

In a pair of Monday season-opener results, Nashville won over Belleville Althoff Catholic 25-18, 25-14, and Metro-East Lutheran lost at Hillsboro 25-5. 25-17.

In results from regular season matches played on Tuesday, Highland won over Alton 25-21, 25-18, it was Breese Mater Dei Catholic winning over Belleville West 25-17, 25-14, Breese Central defeated Althoff 25-17, 25-15, Collinsville swept Metro-East 25-19, 25-18, and Belleville East won over Waterloo Gibault Catholic 25-6, 25-8.
