JERSEYVILLE – A day of remembrance for those who lost a family member during their military service will be held later this fall following city approval of an official proclamation and related road closures.
At their Aug. 18, 2026 meeting, Jerseyville City Council members unanimously approved a request from Greg Breden, superintendent of the Veterans Assistance Commission of Jersey County, regarding a proclamation and road closures related to this year’s Gold Star Mothers and Families Ceremony.

The annual ceremony honors the mothers and families of military members who died while serving their country. The event is held each year on the last Sunday in September to align with National Gold Star Mothers Day.
This year’s ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 27, 2026 at the War Memorial on the Jersey County Courthouse lawn at 201 W. Pearl St.
Certain roads in the area will be closed for the ceremony following City Council approval. These include West Pearl St. from Lafayette to Washington St. and Washington St. from West Exchange to West Pearl St., both of which will be closed from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on the day of the ceremony.
Mayor Kevin Stork officially proclaimed the last Sunday in September as Gold Star Mothers and Families Day in the City of Jerseyville at the meeting.
“The brave men and women of our armed forces represent the very best of our great nation, matched only by the families who walk beside them in their service,” Stork stated from the proclamation. “On Gold Star Mothers and Families Day, we solemnly honor the memory of every lost solider, sailor, airman, marine, and Coast Guard and humbly grieve with the families who persevere with remarkable courage, strength, and grace.”
