ALTON - The Alton Police Department is urging residents and visitors to plan ahead for Fireworks on the Mississippi on Friday, July 3, 2026, at the Alton Amphitheater, where thousands are expected to gather for the finale of Alton’s three-day “250 on the Mississippi” celebration.

The free public event in Alton will open its gates at 5 p.m., followed by a performance by The LustreLights at 6:30 p.m. The evening is scheduled to conclude with a fireworks display over the Mississippi River beginning at approximately 9:30 p.m.

In advance of the celebration, the police department shared safety and traffic guidance aimed at helping attendees navigate the crowded riverfront and avoid delays.

Parking near the Amphitheater and downtown riverfront area is expected to fill quickly, according to the department, which said visitors arriving after 8:30 p.m. will have difficulty finding parking. The primary parking area is the Henry Street parking lot south of Landmarks Boulevard, with additional parking available at Russell Commons Park, also known as Dog Park.

The department advised visitors to lock their vehicles and secure valuables before leaving them unattended. It also said drivers should not park in posted no-parking zones, including areas along the levee, Discovery Parkway, Boat Launch Road and Riverfront Drive.

Inside the Amphitheater event area, food and beverages will be available for purchase, and outside food and beverages are not permitted.

Dogs are allowed at the event but must remain on a leash at all times. The department said owners should bring water, bowls and cleanup supplies for their pets.

The department also said weapons are prohibited within the event area. Personal fireworks, including explosive fireworks and other pyrotechnic devices, were also listed among the prohibited items in the safety information provided by the department.

Road closures will take effect following the event to facilitate the safe movement of pedestrians and vehicles. Police said that if a roadway is barricaded, it is closed, and drivers are asked not to move or bypass barricades.

Because of anticipated congestion in the downtown area, motorists will likely find it faster to travel around the city using designated routes rather than attempting to navigate through local streets, the department said.

The Alton Police Department said it appreciates the cooperation of residents and visitors and wishes everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day celebration.

For emergencies, officials said, call 911. For non-emergency police assistance during the event, contact the Alton Police Department at (618) 463-3505.
