ALTON - The Alton Municipal Band will open their season with a concert tonight.
At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 4, 2026, community members can gather at Riverview Park in Alton for the concert, themed “June is Bustin’ Out All Over.” This will be followed by the same concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, June 7, at Haskell Park. Chairman Adam Rogers expressed his excitement to kick off the band’s summer concert series.
“We are going to start our 136th season tonight,” he said. “There’s a lot of history here and a lot of tradition here.”
The Alton Municipal Band will play at 7:30 p.m. on Thursdays at Riverview Park and 7 p.m. on Sundays at Haskell Park throughout the months of June and July. Every week features a new theme and a new guest soloist.
Rogers explained that the musicians have put in “thousands and thousands of hours” learning and practicing their instruments. As a result, the turnaround for the concerts is very quick.
The band comes together to rehearse on Mondays at Lewis and Clark Community College. The musicians sight-read the pieces at rehearsal, then practice over the next few days so they’re ready to go for the concerts on Thursday and Sunday.
Some of the musicians are professionals, while others enjoy weekend gigs, and still others are simply passionate about music. The band ranges in age from high school and college students to older adults, all brought together through their love of music.
On Thursday, June 4, Rogers is especially excited to welcome singer Nadja Kapetanovich, an Alton native who is studying nursing at St. Louis University. Rogers invites people to “come on and hear this incredible singer” as their guest soloist.
Next week, concertgoers can enjoy the “Let’s Dance” theme, followed by “Sailing” on June 18 and 21. The beloved “Children’s Concert” takes the stage on June 25 and 28.
As the United States gears up for its 250th anniversary, the Alton Municipal Band will prepare for the “Patriotic Concert” on July 2 and 5. Following this, they will offer a “half-concert” on July 9 and 12, featuring a special appearance by local band The Warehouse Project.
“All Living Creatures” will be celebrated on July 16 and 18. The summer concert series will come to a close on July 23 and 26 with the theme “Auf Wiedersehen, So Long.”
“That last week is always kind of bittersweet as we pack things up for another year,” Rogers said. “But it’s also always nice to remember how fortunate we are to have what we’ve got here in Alton and how fortunate we are with our audiences that they show up every year and turn up and listen.”
Rogers encourages people to come to the concerts and enjoy the music. He noted that the bigger audience they draw, the more support they receive. You can also support financially by reaching out to the teams at Riverview and Haskell Parks. For $100, you can dedicate the concert to a specific person or group.
“The biggest thing is, just come on out,” Rogers said. “When our folks who make the decisions at City Hall or Parks and Recreation or wherever come out to the park and see a great crowd, they’re more likely to give us the support we need to continue our work. So come on out.”
Rogers hopes the Alton Municipal Band can bring people together for a few fun summer nights in the community. To learn more about the Alton Municipal Band, visit their official webpage or Facebook page for updates.
