“I am happy to be able to come to the state meet," she said. "I wanted to make it to state finals."
Shields said returning to the meet after time away carried added significance.
She also described the state meet as distinct from other competitions because of its large-scale atmosphere and the independence athletes must manage during events with coaches in the stands.
“It is a different atmosphere; no other meet feels quite like this," she said. "Coaches can't be down on the field to help you out at state, and you're kind of on your own. It is a different type of situation,” Shields said.
Shields said the support she receives from her school community and team has been important.
“Civic Memorial is a great community. I love everyone on the track team. My coaches are also great. It is very nice to have that support system,” she said.
