ALTON/JERSEY – A Jerseyville man charged with fleeing from police and a Brighton man accused of assaulting someone with a vehicle face felonies in separate cases.

Cody L. Wells, 33, of Jerseyville, was charged with a Class 4 felony count of aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a peace officer on May 13, 2026.

Wells allegedly knowingly attempted to elude an Alton Police officer who had signaled for Wells to stop the vehicle he was driving on March 26, 2026. His attempted flight from the officer reportedly exceeded 21 mph above the area’s legal speed limit.

In a separate case filed one day later on May 14, 2026, a Brighton resident is accused of assaulting someone using a motor vehicle. 31-year-old Antony M. Stewart faces a Class 4 felony count of aggravated assault.

On May 12, 2026, Stewart allegedly operated a motor vehicle in a manner which placed the victim in reasonable apprehension of being struck by the moving vehicle. Charging documents state he quickly pulled away while the victim was next to the motor vehicle, thereby committing an assault.

The Alton Police Department presented both cases against Wells and Stewart, both of whom were ordered released from custody pending trial.

All individuals charged are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
