GODFREY – Godfrey residents will soon be surveyed on what they want to see in a future recreation center.
Erin Morris with AAIC, the architectural firm chosen to lead the recreation center project, gave Village Board members an update on May 18, 2026 regarding the firm’s six-phase plan to develop the facility from concept to construction.
These six phases include concept planning and programming, master planning, schematic design, design development, construction documents, and construction administration, under a recently approved agreement with AAIC.
Morris said the first phase includes community outreach efforts such as surveys and possible focus groups and “town hall” style meetings. Stakeholder input will then guide the site selection process, also included in the first phase.
“It’s dictating what are their wants and needs out of a rec center, and us getting that on paper [to] start building diagrams, start to determine how [much] square footage we need,” Morris said.
He said the community outreach portion of Phase 1 could be completed within the next three to four weeks once survey questions have been agreed upon. Internal meetings over the next two weeks between AAIC, consultants, and village staff will determine the scheduling of any future town hall meetings. Community feedback and site selection recommendations will then be presented to the board over the next two to three months.
Beth Heinz, co-chairperson of the Godfrey Recreation Center Committee, previously listed a few “must-have” amenities for the proposed rec center based on their own community surveys. These included a centralized multi-sport gym, rental space, an indoor walking path, and a space for concessions.
In a March 18, 2026 presentation to trustees, Heinz said most of the potential rec center sites being looked at so far are located near Glazebrook Park, with more details in this previous story.
