ALTON — At 2 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, Soulcial Kitchen will unveil its newest mobile addition — The Chef & The General food truck — at the Block Party for Good in downtown Alton. The debut marks far more than the launch of another food truck. It is the next chapter in Soulcial Kitchen’s Currency of Caring movement and a public statement that food, done right, is one of the most powerful tools we have to restore dignity, build community, and remind every neighbor that they matter.

The truck pairs two unlikely partners with a shared conviction. Chef Lasse Sorensen — the Emmy-nominated PBS chef behind Food is Love — brings craft, culinary discipline, and a global pantry to every plate. Brigadier General John Michel (USAF, Ret.) — a retired senior military officer turned social entrepreneur, best-selling author, and Co-Founder of Soulcial Kitchen — brings the conviction that there is no such thing as a throwaway life, and no such thing as a throwaway meal. Together, the chef and the general are taking that conviction to the street.
“This truck is the conviction — on wheels,” said General Michel. “Chef Lasse and I come from very different worlds, but we believe the same thing: every person who walks up to our window deserves a plate of food made with care and served with dignity. It doesn’t matter what’s in their wallet. It doesn’t matter what their day has looked like. They matter. That’s what The Chef & The General is built on, and that’s what we’re bringing to Alton on May 22.”
“For me, this truck is everything I love about cooking in one place,” said Chef Lasse Sorensen. “It’s honest food, made fast, served to anyone who shows up hungry. The general and I push each other — he reminds me why we cook, I remind him why technique matters — and the food is better for it. We can’t wait to feed Alton.”
Currency of Caring — the Movement Behind the Truck
Every meal served from The Chef & The General operates on Soulcial Kitchen’s nationally recognized Currency of Caring model. Guests can purchase a meal, redeem a meal token donated by a neighbor, or simply be welcomed if they need to eat that day. Same menu. Same window. Same welcome. No two lines, no two tiers, no questions asked. It is dignity built into the way the food is served, not bolted on after the fact.
Soulcial Kitchen has served more than 390,000 free meals through Currency of Caring across five U.S. states and two countries, and was named the 2025 National Restaurant Association Education Foundation and American Express Community Champion — the top community impact brand in America. The Chef & The General is the model on wheels, ready to bring it to wherever the neighborhood needs it most.
