County Board Chairman Mark Wagner said several out-of-town residents have opted into the “Full Service” and “Recycling Only” options since the city and county’s new trash and recycling program started on May 1, 2026. Under the new program, out-of-town residents are given their first-ever access to the Jerseyville city dump site, which now offers recycling services in addition to standard residential trash and yard waste.
“To date, there are 17 people outside of the city limits of Jerseyville that elected to do the all-in trash and recycling,” Wagner said, noting 23 total city and county residents opted for the Recycling Only service.
“This is a new program,” he added. “I expect as time goes on, we’ll have more people that register for both of these programs.”
Currently, the only accepted items for recycling are plastics #1, #2, and #5, metal cans, paper, cardboard, newspapers, magazines, and paper food containers and cartons. Participating residents are asked to ensure their recyclables are empty, clean, and dry before placing them in their designated Republic Services recycling cart.
Several items are currently not accepted for recycling, including batteries, bio-hazardous waste, construction debris, dishes or mirrors, electronics, food waste, glass, light bulbs, scrap metal, shingles, yard waste, and several plastic products, including plastic bags, food wrappers, and straws.
Board Member Kenneth Grizzle said he would like to see the dump site offer full-service recycling for a wider variety of materials, including chemicals and motor vehicle parts. Wagner emphasized that the county is still easing into the new program, which he described as a “first step” with more materials and recycling locations possible in the future.
Wagner said applications for “Full Service” and “Recycling Only” permits are still available at the County Board offices and Jerseyville City Hall. Permit applications are also available on the Jersey County website, along with more details on local trash and recycling rules and regulations.
