GODFREY - Godfrey Mayor Mike McCormick noted that the village is growing, and he is proud to be a part of this community.
McCormick shared that conversations about the recreation center are continuing, and he is eager to see what happens next. He is also proud of how Glazebrook Park has grown and clarified that the roundabout project will start soon.
“2026, what am I most excited about?” McCormick reflected. “Just the way our programs are growing and just the thought that we’re actually having conversations on having a rec center. We’re having conversations on having another turf soccer field. I think those are the things I’m really excited about. Just to keep our programs growing and keep improving roads.”
The Godfrey Board of Trustees recently approved an architectural firm to take the first steps toward developing the recreation center. McCormick said his idea was to take the revenue Godfrey received from the dispensary and use this toward the rec center. He is eager to see the center come to fruition, especially because it will allow Godfrey to further expand their programs.
“We were having trouble with gym space. Once again, because our programs are growing, we’re running out of gym space. So it would help if we had our own gym,” he added. “But I’m sure that hopefully it will bear some fruit down the road and sooner or later kids will be playing basketball and volleyball at a rec center that’s built by the Village of Godfrey.”
In the meantime, Glazebrook Park is busy. McCormick said that Godfrey has begun sharing its soccer fields with several teams and programs following the Gordon Moore Park sinkhole in Alton.
He would like to see another turf field built at Glazebrook if possible, though he noted that this would also require more parking and bigger conversations about how to accommodate it.
McCormick is also pleased that the dog park is “a lot more popular” than he anticipated. They have sold over 100 memberships for this year, which he said is “pretty exciting.” As Glazebrook continues to grow, McCormick hopes it can be a space for community members to play and enjoy for years to come.
“I’m quite proud of Glazebrook. It’s grown quite a bit since I’ve been mayor,” he said. “Every time I drive down that street, I see the splash pad with a bunch of kids out there or the pickleball courts with all ages of people. I go by the soccer fields and the lights are on and all those kids are out there. It makes me feel pretty good deep down inside.”
McCormick also addressed the Board’s recent decision to install another speed bump on Levis Lane. He was surprised that this was “so controversial,” but he pointed out that a lot of complaints he receives are about speeding. He hopes the speed bumps help mitigate speeding and protect neighbors and community members.
“Since I’ve been mayor, probably one of the biggest complaints that I ever get is about people speeding in our community,” he said. “If speeding is a problem, I think that’s a good solution to help with the speeding problem.”
McCormick also acknowledged the upcoming roundabout project that will change traffic on Delmar and Homer Adams Parkway. He clarified that this is a project through the Illinois Department of Transportation, not the village.
He said “to [his] understanding” that IDOT will begin working on the project this summer when Evangelical School is on its break, with plans to continue throughout the fall. He added that the roads will not be closed at any point during construction.
“Contrary to a rumor that was floating around before that the road was going to be shut down completely, the roads are not going to be shut down at any time. They’re going to be open to traffic. It may be a little slower, but it’ll be open to traffic,” he said. “I think it’s going to improve the flow of traffic eventually out there from Delmar into Homer Adams.”
The village is continuing to grow, and McCormick looks forward to this continued expansion. He plans to continue advocating for Godfrey.
