GODFREY – Levis Lane in Godfrey will see another speed bump installed after neighborhood residents called for additional measures to curb recklessly fast driving in the area.

Members of the Godfrey Public Safety Committee unanimously rejected a petition to remove the current speed bump on Levis Lane at their May 5, 5026 meeting. Instead, they unanimously approved the addition of another permanent speed bump on Levis Lane.

Jerry Kelly, a year-long neighborhood resident who initially supported removing the speed bump, said he now supports adding another speed bump after the reckless driving he’s seen on multiple occasions.

“I didn’t always support speed bumps. When we first moved in, I actually signed a petition against them,” Kelly said, adding he previously saw them as an intrusive and unnecessary nuisance. “I’ve changed my mind and I believe we need to act – a single speed bump on Levis Lane, in my opinion, is not enough.”

Kelly said visibility is often limited around curves in the roadway, posing a safety risk to pedestrians exercising and visiting the nearby Nature Institute, adding: “If we truly want to enjoy … having walkers, hikers, walkers, bikers, and families, let’s take a simple step – make a reasonable step to make it safer.”

Village Engineer Rich Beran said the first speed study was conducted between Eagle Pointe Road and Bryden Lane. He said another speed study will be conducted between Bryden Lane and Colonial Drive to determine where to place the next speed bump.

A Traffic Analysis Report conducted in the 4600 block of Levis Lane from April 13-27, 2026 shows 85% of drivers traveled at 36 mph on the road with a current 30 mph speed limit. The top speed recorded during the same period was 73 mph.

The report shows most of the area’s speed violations occurred on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with the fewest violations occurring on Fridays. 8,440 total vehicles were counted traveling on Levis Lane during the two-week period.
