Allen SnyderJERSEYVILLE – Allen Snyder has seen his students turn their spark into success using skills he learned and passed along to future generations.

Snyder is getting ready to retire this year after 32 years of teaching for Jersey Community Unit School District 100. For Teacher Appreciation Week, Snyder reflected on his teaching career spanning over three decades.

As an Industrial Orientation Teacher for Jersey Community High School grades 8-12, Snyder said he “fell into” becoming a teacher and grew to enjoy how rewarding the profession has become.

He said his favorite parts of the job have been connecting with his students and “passing along the skills I was taught.” While difficult at times, especially when helping student navigate their own life challenges, Snyder said teaching “is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.”

Over his decades of work with students, Snyder said he has most enjoyed “seeing their face when ‘the lightbulb goes on,’” and hearing his students’ success stories years later, underscoring the positive impact he’s had on them.

After retirement, Snyder said he plans on “traveling, camping, fishing and hunting,” or “just about anything that has to do with the outdoors.”
