CASEYVILLE - A semitruck strike that brought down a highway sign across Interstate 64 near the I-255 exit was snarling traffic in the Caseyville area as of late Thursday morning, April 9, 2026, as transportation crews worked to reopen the roadway.

The crash happened on I-64 approaching the I-255 exit. Illinois State Police rerouted traffic to Illinois 157 at Caseyville, and congestion backed up for several miles from I-255 past Illinois 159 in Fairview Heights, the Illinois Department of Transportation said.

“Be mindful of your route to work this morning,” the Caseyville Police Department said in a statement. “There’s significant congestion on I-64, as this photo is just west of RT 157 on I-64, and traffic through the village has increased drastically due to temporary rerouting. Plan for extra travel time, drive slowly, and stay safe.”

As of late morning, the Illinois Department of Transportation said it was still working in the area.

“Right now our focus is on getting the Interstate reopened, and we’re working as quickly as possible to make that happen,” said Paul Wappel, a public information officer for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

IDOT said drivers should expect delays and, if possible, stay away from the area while work continues.
