[WASHINGTON, D.C.] – Combat Veteran and U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) issued the following statement after Donald Trump announced a “ceasefire” with Iran:

“Before Donald Trump launched his illegal, unjustified and costly war, the Strait of Hormuz was open and violence free, gas was $1 cheaper and thousands more people were alive—including 13 American servicemembers. Only someone as deeply incompetent, delusional and unfit as Trump would see this as ‘winning’ when the American people are so clearly worse off.

“While I hope a ceasefire is realized, the American people are utterly baffled by how we got here. Again and again, Trump promised no new foreign wars and to lower everyday costs. But what they’re getting is the self-proclaimed President of Peace threatening to use their taxpayer resources—and their sons and daughters—to commit war crimes while they can barely afford gas, groceries and child care here at home. This unprecedented chaos cannot be tolerated.

“The Senate must use every tool at our disposal to force Trump’s Cabinet under oath, hold public hearings and do our jobs on behalf of the American people suffering under Trump’s incompetence. Republican Leader Thune must immediately call the Senate back into session to vote on a War Powers Resolution that would rein this President in. Our servicemembers, our people and the future of our democracy depends on it.”
