Responding officers “quickly obtained a description of the suspect,” Fairview Heights Police said. A sergeant and an officer spotted the suspect several blocks away and took the person into custody without incident, according to police. Police said a firearm was also located.

The person who was shot was pronounced dead at the scene after lifesaving measures were attempted, Fairview Heights Police said.

A large crowd gathered, and other law enforcement agencies were called to help secure the scene, police said. Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services processed the scene for evidence. Fairview Heights Police said the suspect was known to the victim and that there are no other suspects. The victim’s name will not be released until family members are notified, police said.

Fairview Heights Police detectives are continuing to investigate and will present their findings to the State’s Attorney’s Office for review.
