Sophia Groppel was named the Optimist Student of the Month for Alton Middle School, while Cruz Janis was recognized from East Elementary School.
Alton Middle School Principal Dr. Brian Saenz introduced Groppel and commended her for her “significant impact” on the school. Groppel is involved in the school’s choir and theater programs. Despite being a newer student, she is making waves for her “strong work ethic, uplifting spirit and commitment to excellence.”
“Kindness, respect and courage set her apart. She stands up for others and ensures everyone feels welcome and included,” Saenz said. “She is truly a role model who helps make our school community a better place.”
Optimist Students of the Month receive a $25 gift card and can choose where to donate an additional $25. Groppel chose to donate her money to St. Jude Children’s Hospital. “He takes his education seriously and is motivated to continue learning and moving forward in school,” DeConcini said. “This year, Cruz is especially proud of learning how to look at situations from other people’s point of view before forming an opinion, a skill that shows thoughtfulness and maturity.” Janis hopes to be either a farmer or a welder when he grows up. He chose to donate his $25 to 5A’s Animal Shelter.
Lanea DeConcini, principal of East Elementary School, said Janis “exemplifies what it means to be a model Redbird.” He is a member of LEGO Club and Recycling Club. He wrestles with Alton Little Redbirds Wrestling Club and plays football and baseball when he isn’t working on his family’s farm. DeConcini added that Janis shows responsibility and a strong work ethic every day.
