GLEN CARBON – The latest phase of the Glen Carbon Road Shared Use Path is moving forward after village trustees unanimously approved a funding agreement for the project’s design.

At their Feb. 10, 2026 meeting, Village Board members unanimously approved a resolution executing a joint funding agreement with the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) for the Glen Carbon Road Shared Use Path Phase 3.
This newest stretch of the shared use path will span 0.37 miles from Dunwoody Drive to Illinois Route 159, according to the village’s Joint Funding Agreement with IDOT. Once completed, the full length of the trail will connect Schon Park and Route 159.
Design engineering for Phase 3 was awarded to Volkert, with design completion anticipated this summer and construction expected to start in 2027, according to Public Works Director Scott Slemer.
The design engineering costs for Phase 3 total $120,000; Slemer said the village will request reimbursement of up to $96,000 in Illinois Transportation Enhancement Program (ITEP) funds to cover 80% of the project cost, with the remaining 20% totaling $24,000 to be covered by village funds.
Slemer added the village will eventually send out a Request For Proposals (RFP) before selecting a firm to perform construction engineering services as the project continues ahead.
